In accordance with my research, I came up with several rules to follow to help support my body as I went through chemo. I’ve continued following them in the hopes that one day the doctors will pronounce me cured!
- Do not eat sweets.
- Sugar isn’t good for anyone, but when it comes to cancer, it’s even worse. Cancer cells selectively consume glucose, which is why PET-CT scans use it to measure your progress. All treats on this blog are sugar free (except a small amount in 70%+ dark chocolate), using the bare minimum of honey in certain cases. So fight your sweet tooth. You’ll appreciate it later.
- Go gluten free.
- Modern wheat is a gut irritant in even the healthiest people. While you’re undergoing harsh treatments, it is best to avoid irritating the already sensitive stomach and intestinal lining. Starches allowed are: gluten-free pasta or bread, rice, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.
- Avoid dairy.
- Especially for solid tumors and hormone-dependent cancers (such as breast, uterine and prostate), cow dairy is an absolute NO. Dairy has been shown in multiple studies to activate the growth hormones that spur the growth of cancer. I know it tastes amazing, but please avoid all milk, cheese, and ice creams.
- Most meals must be accompanied by fish or seafood as the main protein. Chicken is acceptable. Beef is only allowed once a week, a maximum of 1/3 lb or 400g. Strictly avoid pork and lamb, and do not eat any processed meats (including ham, sausage, bacon, etc)
- Omega-3s are vital for calming inflammation, which is key for beating cancer. Most people are disturbingly short on this all-important fatty acid, since the modern Western diet leads us to over consume Omega-6s.
- Half of every meal plate must be full of vegetables and fruit. These are our superfoods. These are what’ll help us win.
