The first emotion was shock. Then came denial. Then with acceptance came confusion.
And it was when I realized I had no where to go, no where to have someone tell me what to do, that I understood how confused I really was. I had cancer. Okay. But what now?
Indeed, oftentimes there is a swift and fluid movement from diagnosis to treatment. In their rush to help their patients, doctors often underestimate the depth of confusion that a person will experience when it comes to confronting their illness.
So to simplify matters, here is my basic Start Guide for Cancer Patients:
- Understand what your diagnosis is. Arm yourself with questions to ask your hematologist-oncologist.
- Prepare for treatment by supporting yourself nutritionally.
- Research and incorporate exercise into your daily pre-, during-, and post-cycle life.
- Rejoice in your remission! Don’t stress over a possible relapse. You’ve been doing the best you can.
- Begin recovery by shifting your diet, exercise, and rest regimen to support a healthier you.
- You’re cured. Cry those tears of joy; there’s no shame. You’re a real warrior.
